MICHAEL FRERKING: SERVICES
Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay area, Michael was witness to that area's uncontrolled growth. Choosing to direct his energies toward a more sustainable, green, solution to our built environment, Michael obtained his architectural degree from Arizona State University in 1971. Unlike most architects, however, Michael recognized early in his career that quality architecture designed to meet both a specified budget and high sustainable building standards is only as good as one's knowledge of green construction. Originally acting as both architect and contractor, Michael now focuses his efforts on his architectural practice but still highly recommends a collaborative relationship between architect, the chosen contractor and the client from the start of the project.
Throughout the years, Michael also focused on developing the most obvious renewable resource in the world for wall building - the earth below our feet. Beginning with adobe and rammed earth, Michael began to chart a new course in 1995 when he pioneered a unique technology - Poured Earth - which allowed him simultaneously to reduce the time and cost of labor while raising both strength and insulation values for earthen buildings.
Michael's goals are four-fold:
- Continue along the path toward "zero-load" homes (zero energy use).
- Build elegantly conceived sustainable communities for all income levels.
- Create buildings that last for generations but which, at the end of their life, can be recycled.
- Make use of local and regional renewable resources and skills.
